The Food and Drug Administration's approval last week of Life
Technologies Inc.'s pioneering test for Human Papillomavirus (HPV)
gives the Gaithersburg firm immediate access to what analysts say
could be one of the biggest new diagnostic markets available to the
biotechnology industry.
Life Technologies beat out two other firms in receiving the
government go-ahead for the test for HPV-a sexually transmitted
infection linked to cervical cancer-adding another first to the
accomplishments already recorded by Washington-area firms in the
growing diagnostic testing business.
