FAIRBURY -- Detroit may be the Motor City, but Fairbury will be the Mow-tor City when the Illinois Lawn Mower Racing Association cuts through this Central Illinois town on Thursday.

Mower categories begin with a stock class that consists of common riding lawn mowers with the blades removed. Higher classes permit more modifications, and machines with names like the Batmowbile, Mowron, Turfinator and Yankee Clipper reach speeds of 90 mph.

Top speeds of 40- to 50 mph are more common on racetracks which average about one-eighth of a mile.
