Article: Twin City firefighters off to New Orleans

BLOOMINGTON -- Twin City firefighters going to New Orleans have been told smearing Vicks VapoRub on their faces will make the stench easier to bear.

They'll sleep in tents with makeshift air conditioning called a "swamp cooler" -- a fan blowing over ice -- then move into a college dormitory.

Despite the hardships they will face, there was no shortage of volunteers for the six slots available for firefighters on a two- week rescue-and-recovery operation, officials said. Virtually all firefighters said they wanted to go, officials said.

The six from Bloomington-Normal left Sunday for Champaign, where they will join nine firefighters.
