Article: More Soviet, Eastern European Emigres to Be Allowed Into U.S.

The Reagan administration yesterday announced it will increase by 7,000 the number of Soviet and Eastern European emigres allowed to enter the United States this year, with the additional numbers coming from the unused quota for Southeast Asian refugees.

State Department spokesman Charles Redman said the shift will allow a total of 25,000 Soviets and Eastern Europeans to come here this year-easing a mounting backlog caused by increased Soviet Jewish emigration while not significantly affecting Asian immigration. He said the 7,000 places were mostly taken from refugee slots earlier set aside for Vietnamese political prisoners and others who have not yet been granted permission to leave ...
