Earlier this month, newly elected lawmakers from around the country packed their bags and headed to Washington. Robert L. Calhoun did the opposite.

Last week, Calhoun locked the door to his Connecticut Avenue and K Street NW law office and left town for his new seat in the Virginia State Capitol.

Once here, the Alexandria resident quickly learned what it means to be a rookie and a Republican in Richmond, a town where seniority delivers you to the gates of power and Democrats let you in.
