NORMAL - Vern Hanks remembers a hot July day when he decided to take a motorcycle ride. He traveled to Decatur, then to Springfield, then to East Peoria and back to Bloomington.

All the while he was working. He even collected mileage. Every stop along the way had something to do with his work as director of Illinois State Universitys motorcycle safety program that is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. Hanks, 57, has been there from the start.
