Article: Scholarship Set Up In Paul Berg's Memory

Last week, the Health section suffered a severe loss. On Monday, Jan. 9, our assistant editor, Paul Berg, was found murdered in his apartment. He was 30 years old.

In his memory, the Paul Berg Scholarship has been established at the University of Maryland to encourage promising students to work on the campus newspaper, The Diamondback, where Paul Berg began his career as a writer and editor.

Mr. Berg came to The Washington Post in 1982 as a copy editor. Two years later, he helped start the Health section and in 1986, he was made assistant editor.

But titles cannot convey the crucial role he played here. Since Health began four years ago, Paul Berg has been a mainstay of the section. To ...
