Glyptography has had a rocky history. The art and science of
carving and engraving precious stones and other materials,
glyptography has disappeared and reappeared for 30,000 years. Helen
Serras is one of the few people who is carrying on the tradition
today.
"It's intriguing to me to create something so small, yet so
durable," she says. "I used to be the type of person that did things
very quickly. I've earned patience to find great pleasure in this
work."
Serras will be sharing her patience and knowledge with
participants in a glyptography workshop next week. She'll provide a
historical overview and students will complete a simple carving on a
