NORMAL - The lights spread from the aisles to the walls, bathing 700 faces in orange light.

The flames flickered throughout the church, reflecting light off churchgoers eyeglasses as they sang "Silent Night."

"All is calm, all is bright," their voices rang out in unison.

Worshippers packed churches throughout Central Illinois on Sunday for Christmas Eve services. At Calvary United Methodist Church, 1700 N. Towanda Ave., the lights dimmed, ushers lit candles of those nearest the aisles and people touched candlewicks to spread the light at the end of services.

"We wish you a very Merry Christmas," said the Rev. Lori Harvey, associate pastor at Calvary.
