The balalaika has come a long way, baby. Far from the days, 100
years ago, when peasants carried it around the Russian countryside,
singing and strumming its funny triangular face.
This Saturday, at 8:30 p.m. in the Kennedy Center Concert Hall,
the Osipov Balalaika Orchestra will team the mandolinlike instrument
with the voices of Bolshoi Opera baritone Vladimir Malchenko and
mezzo-soprano Galina Borisova. They're going to perform works by
Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky, Rimsky-Korsakov and Gliere. And they are
going to knock our socks off, according to Max McCullough, president
of the 500-member Balalaika and Dorma Association of America.
