In a move that officials hope will ease the housing shortage for
people with AIDS, the Whitman-Walker Clinic announced the opening
yesterday of the area's first medical facility for AIDS patients who
are too sick to live at home but not sick enough to be in the
hospital.
The community residential facility-which was licensed last month
by the D.C. government-will offer short-term nursing assistance for
AIDS patients.
There are 10 homes in the District for people with AIDS, but
these are all for people who can take care of themselves or who can
pay for special nursing care. Hospitals and other people who work
with AIDS have reported great difficulty in placing patients who need
