Mention "metal in the microwave" and you're likely to get one of
two responses: screaming or yelling. For years the merest metal
fragment was thought to be a big no-no, causing new culinary
catastrophes like arcing and popping. But in fact, when used
correctly, metal in the form of aluminum foil can actually improve
your microwave cooking.
Take stews, for example. When a single sheet of foil is
sandwiched between the food and the plastic wrap covering, several
exciting things occur during microwaving. The foil helps the food
simmer more quickly and evenly by directing the microwaves to the
