Article: DOT defends charges to store Wal-Mart faced millions in costs

ELLSWORTH - Despite unprecedented requirements imposed upon a now- canceled Wal-Mart Supercenter on Route 3, state transportation officials defended their decision to make the company spend millions of dollars on improvements to state roads.

Steve Landry, assistant traffic engineer for the Maine Department of Transportation, said Monday that the DOT estimates for the traffic improvement costs were $2.8 million.

The estimate of nearly $4 million cited by Wal-Mart officials when they announced last month the cancellation of their plans to build the 208,000-square-foot Supercenter may have included some traffic improvement costs not associated with state roads, Landry said.
