Carla Perlo-in a brief, typically amiable and unassuming
valedictory for her troupe, Perlo/Bloom & Company, at the Dance Place
yesterday afternoon-quoted her mother:
"My mother is the smartest woman. `Remember,' she said, `even
though you're coming off this stage-the world is a stage.' "
Dancer-choreographer Perlo has been playing and will continue to
play a major role on that latter stage. As artistic-executive
director and cofounder-with her musician husband Steve Bloom-of Dance
Place, she has not only established Washington's preeminent center
for contemporary dance and nurtured it through thick and thin, but
also spearheaded its growth into one of the nation's model
