FORT KENT - Before the arrival of the Iron Horse here in 1902, the
town was smaller in size and valuation than neighboring Frenchville.
The arrival of the railroad, however, changed all that. Fort
Kent's size tripled in three years and quadrupled again 15 years
later. Frenchville, located 15 miles from the Fort Kent railhead,
dwindled and never caught up again.
On Saturday, the Fort Kent Historical Society, which now uses the
railroad station as a museum, celebrated the 100th anniversary of the
arrival of the railroad in Fort Kent.
