Article: Hancock County police seek new drug task force

ELLSWORTH - County and municipal law enforcement agencies are poised to ask local residents to finance their own drug task force to focus only on the rising drug problem in Hancock County.

The move, which could be a first for Maine, is the result of a lack of state drug agents assigned to Hancock County and a recent meeting in Southwest Harbor, during which more than 200 residents said they were angry about inadequate drug enforcement efforts.

"You can't win a war you don't fight," Sheriff William Clark said Monday. "There's a void [in drug enforcement] in Hancock County right now, and if we don't address it, I don't think anyone else is going to be able to."
