Basic journalism, as well as common sense, dictates that it is not good form to disclose the race of a person who may be involved in a news story unless that fact is clearly pertinent to the story. One violates this guideline at risk of becoming labeled with the dreaded "r" word, as any reporter of even modest tenure in these sensitive times can attest.

There are times, however, when the newsmaker's race is obviously the only reason for the news story to see the light of day. That was the case with a recent story involving Chicago Cubs manager Dusty Baker that has been pounced upon by those politically correct souls among us who live to be offended.
