Article: High-tech bomb robot to join specialized Bangor police team

BANGOR - The Bangor Police Department's Explosives Ordinance Disposal Team, or bomb squad, has received a $470,000 federal grant that will be used to purchase a bomb robot, among other things.

When it arrives, the robot will be the second of its kind in Maine, according to Police Chief Don Winslow. The Maine State Police own the only such robot in Maine.

Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said Tuesday that the state police robot is housed in the department's negotiations van, headquartered in Augusta.

McCausland said the state police's robot, which cost $140,000, is used by both its bomb squad and tactical team and was purchased with federal grant money.
