Jim Palmer, outspoken in his many differences with manager Earl
Weaver during his nonpareil 19-year pitching career with the
Baltimore Orioles, is coming back to talk about the team in an
official capacity. Baltimore television station WMAR-TV-2 and the
Orioles announced yesterday that Palmer has been hired to do
play-by-play for the coming season.
The assignment is a new one for Palmer, who has received
considerable acclaim as a baseball analyst for ABC Sports since
retiring as player after the 1984 season. Most recently, Palmer was
part of a three-man ABC team that included play-by-play man Al
Michaels and analyst Tim McCarver. ABC and NBC recently lost the
