National media coverage of tragic shootings and the spreading
influence of heavily armed Los Angeles-based gangs have sparked the
most intense gun-control activity in years, according to officials in
Washington and California. As many as 30 states and dozens of cities
and counties are weighing bans on military semiautomatic assault
rifles.
The national debate focuses mainly on California, where Handgun
Control Inc., the nation's leading antigun organization, has budgeted
$100,000 to promote a ban on assault rifles and where several
Washington-based officials of the rival National Rifle Association
(NRA) have visited recently.
