Article: Report: Washington County state's poorest

MACHIAS - Washington County residents are poor, older and less- educated than the state average, according to the recently released Poverty in Maine 2003 report prepared by the Margaret Chase Smith Center for Public Policy.

Tim King, Washington Hancock Community Agency executive director, said, however, that he doesn't see the downsides of Washington County's profile.

While acknowledging that the county's statistics are "starkly the worst" of all of Maine's counties, King said Tuesday that the insights he gains day-to-day in his position allow him to see "an incredible resiliency" among Washington County residents.
