Vincent Persichetti (1915-1987) was one of the most productive
composers of his generation, with opus numbers extending beyond 160.
He produced music in all forms-keyboard, chamber, choral, symphonic,
orchestral, one opera, a lot of songs and (perhaps the music for
which he is best known) numerous pieces for band.
His music is frequently performed, reflecting his technical
expertise, lucidity of structure and ease of communication. It is
easy music to like, even when he ventures into atonality and some of
it is likely to be around for a long while.
Amid this abundance, Persichetti's four string quartets have not
