Article: Board won't back Hancock County drug task force

MOUNT DESERT - Selectmen declined Monday to support a proposed county drug enforcement task force but did agree to poll town residents to find out whether they favor it.

Selectmen heard a presentation by Hancock County Commissioner Fay Lawson and Sheriff William Clark asking for the town's support to create a three-person drug enforcement team to concentrate only on county drug activity.

The county officials blamed the lack of drug enforcement in Hancock County on the state, which has refused to provide funding for the effort. Officials also blamed the lack of federal help to hire more specialty agents.
