In Outlook {Feb. 5} The Post featured commentary by David Braun,
Texas director of the Nature Conservancy, headlined "Is `Lonesome
Dove' a Turkey?" The subhead read: "A Lively Novel, but Dead Wrong on
the Natural History of Texas."
Mr. Braun's commentary seemed interesting and authoritative until
he began his defense of water moccasins. Mr. Braun states that the
worst inaccuracy in the book is the fatal attack on an Irish
immigrant by a swarm of water moccasins as he crosses the Nueces
River.
Mr. Braun assures Post readers that "to begin with, water
moccasins do not live as far south as the Nueces River." Mr. Braun
complains about many deficiencies in the novel, but he seems
