Maine on target with port security Private sector ready for strict new rules

Landmark port security rules will take effect later this year, an ongoing legacy of the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks, but maritime industry leaders on both sides of the U.S.-Canadian border say the private sector is well-prepared for the changes.

The new rules, adopted by some 160 nations, will include mandated vessel inventories, security plans and assessments, and screening procedures for both passengers and cargo, according to officials.

Automatic identification systems, or AIS, also will be required on commercial vessels on international voyages and certain vessels more than 65 feet long by Dec. 31, 2004.
