Article: Inflatable life jacket for kids displayed Coast Guard visits Bangor boat show

BANGOR - Twenty-eight children under the age of 12 died in boating accidents in the United States in 2002, according to statistics gathered by the U.S. Coast Guard. Forty percent of the children were not wearing life jackets.

Members of the local chapter of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, the volunteer civilian arm of the organization, are working to lower that statistic. They attended the annual boat show at the Bangor Civic Center over the weekend to distribute information about boating safety.

One member of Flotilla 12 brought along his 9-year-old grandson to demonstrate an inflatable life jacket for children which recently became available in retail stores.
