Ronald Reagan, the patron saint of modern conservatism, has
agreed to lend his name to the fortnightly bible of the movement,
National Review, as the newest member of the magazine's board of
directors.
William F. Buckley Jr., the columnist, author and founder of the
34-year-old magazine, said yesterday that the arrangement with the
former president-a charter subscriber-was "the formalization of an
informal relationship" that has existed for some time. Reagan and
Buckley have been friends for years, and Reagan has spoken at several
National Review banquets.
"The nature of his participation will have to evolve," Buckley
