Recipes confront us everywhere: in hundreds of new cookbooks each year and dozens of magazines each month, on television each week, and on videotapes you can rent in a minute. All that's old hat, though. Now we have a cooking opera.

Being a pioneer effort, it is just a tiny cooking opera, merely one 20-minute aria of a Julia Child chocolate cake. This musical recipe-composed by Lee Hoiby and performed by Jean Stapleton-will premiere at the Kennedy Center in Washington on March 8 as the finale of an evening of Hoiby's music.
