Recipes confront us everywhere: in hundreds of new cookbooks
each year and dozens of magazines each month, on television each
week, and on videotapes you can rent in a minute. All that's old
hat, though. Now we have a cooking opera.
Being a pioneer effort, it is just a tiny cooking opera, merely
one 20-minute aria of a Julia Child chocolate cake. This musical
recipe-composed by Lee Hoiby and performed by Jean Stapleton-will
premiere at the Kennedy Center in Washington on March 8 as the finale
of an evening of Hoiby's music. Then it will travel to Long Beach,
Calif., and Santa Fe, N.M., for performances in April, as the curtain
raiser for Hoiby's operatic version of Ruth Draper's "The ...
