The explosion of new television channels in Europe promises
opportunities for indigenous suppliers of programming, but the main
beneficiary so far has the American film industry.
U.S. movie and television production companies have been
besieged by the new channels seeking European broadcast rights to
their film libraries and future releases.
Last fall, British Satellite Broadcasting went on a shopping
spree in Hollywood to stock up for its movie channel, to be launched
this fall. BSB committed itself to a $300-million-plus joint deal
with Paramount and MCA-Universal, just after signing up for a $160
million film package with Columbia Pictures.
