Sen. Gordon J. Humphrey (R-N.H.), one of the most vocal
conservatives in the Senate, announced yesterday that he will not
seek a third term in 1990. "Two terms is plenty," Humphrey said at a
news conference in Concord.
Humphrey is the second leading conservative Republican senator to
announce his retirement next year. Sen. William L. Armstrong
(R-Colo.) announced last month that he will not seek a third term.
Humphrey, 48, said in a telephone interview that he has "no fixed
plan" and will return to private life in January 1991.
"Twelve years is the right place to round it off," he said.
"Eighteen years is too darn long. Serving in Congress should not be
a career. . . . You get burned out ...
