Article: Taye brothers lift Portland to title Freshman smashes 1,600 record

WINDHAM - On the hottest day of 2005 to date, Maine track and field fans witnessed perhaps the greatest high school race ever in the Pine Tree State.

When Portland brothers Ayalew and Sintayheu Taye and South Portland's Eric Giddings toed the line for the 1,600-meter run at Saturday's state Class A title meet at Windham High School, spectators, coaches, and officials knew they'd be watching something exciting.

"It's enjoyable for the crowd to watch those kids [the Tayes] run against Giddings," said Portland coach Carroll Nappi.

Sintayheu Taye, a freshman, would blister former Edward Little of Auburn star Ben Fletcher's 1,600-meter standard with a time of 4 minutes, 9.69 seconds. Ayalew Taye, ...
