Article: Bar Harbor may raise cruise ship fees

BAR HARBOR - Cruise ships that weigh anchor in Frenchman Bay so their passengers can patronize local businesses and tour Acadia National Park may have to pay higher municipal fees next summer.

The local harbor committee voted 5-0 Monday to recommend that the town raise its per-ship port fee from $1,500 to $1,750 for 2006.

According to Charlie Phippen, Bar Harbor's harbor master, the fee would be comparable to what Portland charges now but still less than what cruise ships have to pay to anchor and discharge passengers in other ports.
