Article: Berry suit payments to be mailed

Nearly $1 million that should have gone to the state's wild blueberry growers during four seasons in the late 1990s finally is making its way into the growers' hands.

Checks ranging from $5.03 for Dennis Hatton of Charlotte to $126,392 for Guptill Farms of Machias will go in the mail next week, the result of a class-action lawsuit against Maine's four largest processors that the growers won more than a year and a half ago.

Three of the four processors were found to have fixed prices in the lawsuit heard in November 2003 in Knox County Superior Court. The fourth had reached an out-of-court settlement in advance of the civil trial.
