With a yellow-dipped paintbrush no wider than an infant's
thumbnail, Verna Cox touches a china tile just four times to create
the delicate petals of a wild rose, capturing the shadows and subtle
hues all at once.
Working in the basement of her Verona Island home overlooking the
Penobscot River, the 75-year-old woman peers through bifocals at the
tile. She dips one of her soft German sable brushes, washed in
turpentine, in mixing oil. She lifts the jar of oil to her nose and
sniffs: "I love the smell ... Mmm, there's a hint of mint." She mixes
the oil with paint powder and fills one corner of her brush. Making
short, smooth strokes, she paints lifelike leaves, sawtoothed edges,
to accent her ...
