Article: Medical School Test Revised; Balance Sought Between Science, Humanities

Hoping to attract students with a broader education, American medical schools yesterday announced they have changed the basic admission test to balance the focus on science with essays evaluating a student's thinking and writing skills.

The changes are the first in more than 15 years, and are meant to encourage future doctors to study more in liberal arts and humanities. Medical educators said the new tests would help eliminate the strong pressure many undergraduates experience to study only science if they hope to enter medical school.
