Article: Commissioners mull moving office Washington County may buy building for district attorney's space

MACHIAS - Facing the renewal of a $27,000 annual lease by the end of January for the district attorney's office, Washington County's commissioners decided Thursday to look elsewhere for a place to call home.

They have another Machias building in mind that they may want to buy: 34 Center St.

"I can understand a county leasing a photocopier," said Michael Povich, the district attorney for both Washington and Hancock counties, who drove from Ellsworth for the commissioners' regular monthly meeting. "But it doesn't make sense for the county to continue leasing a building."

The county has rented a house at 12 Cooper St., owned by Larry Barker and Michael Hennessey, for the last 12 or 13 years. ...
