ART
When it comes to picking modern art, the Hirshhorn Museum and
Sculpture Garden has proved itself of late the most courageous and
progressive of Washington's museums. "Recent Acquisitions, 1986-1988"
is lively and inclusive and never ever dull. The Hirshhorn isn't
rich. Its director, James T. Demetrion, doesn't have a lot of cash
to purchase art. But he has something more important: He has daring,
integrity and reach. For those tired of the same old stuff-the
recent art most often shown in our national museums-his richly varied
show, though somewhat tattered at the fringes, will come as a relief.
