Article: Rescuers free whale entangled in rope Humpback's life was endangered

MOUNT DESERT ISLAND - A humpback whale that was entangled in marine gear off the coast of Mount Desert Island for at least 20 hours was cut free just after noon Sunday.

At approximately 12:30 p.m. a rescue crew from the Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies used a sharp knife fastened at the end of a 10-foot pole to slice away rope that wrapped around the 30-foot whale's neck and mouth. Severing that one line freed the whale, and after two large kicks rescuers did not see the whale again, Bob Bowman, network coordinator for Provincetown, said Sunday afternoon in a telephone interview.
