Article: Plans set for Dec. 30 opening of new bridge

VERONA ISLAND - Officials from the Maine Dept. of Transportation and the BridgeFest Committee are ready to open the new Penobscot Narrows Bridge later this month.

The new bridge is scheduled to open to traffic at 1 p.m. on Saturday, December 30, and the opening ceremony will be a quick one that also will involve the official closing of the 75-year-old Waldo- Hancock Bridge, according to Carol Morris, the DOT spokesperson for the project.

The ceremony will begin with a handful of antique automobiles that will be the last to cross the old Waldo-Hancock Bridge. Once these vehicles cross, the old bridge will be officially closed, Morris said
