Article: Ellsworth OKs methadone clinic moratorium

ELLSWORTH - City officials on Monday bought themselves six months to come up with an ordinance structure to accommodate methadone clinics, in the event a provider decides to come calling.

In a unanimous vote that followed minimal discussion, Ellsworth city councilors decided to adopt an emergency 180-day moratorium on methadone treatment facilities.

"It was brought to our attention by staff that our current ordinances were silent on the placement of such facilities," said City Council Chairman Gary Fortier, who sponsored the request.

While a provider has not formally brought plans to Ellsworth, City Manager Stephen Gunty acknowledged that he had been approached casually in recent months.
