Article: MDI group monitors cruise ship effects

BAR HARBOR - A local environmental advocacy group has not found any long-term detrimental effects caused by the town's growing cruise ship business, but it has no plans to stop researching how the ship visits affect the area.

Dr. Jane Disney, executive director of Mount Desert Island Water Quality Coalition, said Thursday that the effect of the cruise ships on Frenchman Bay has been "really minimal." The group hopes to continue its research, however, in order to be able to quickly identify any environmental issues that may arise, she said.
