The first time Ron Gastia stopped somebody for speeding, he made the driver cry.

That was 24 years ago, when Gastia was a rookie police officer.

Now, Gastia, 49, is in his rookie weeks as chief of Bangor police, but he hasn't forgotten that first stop.

He caught the driver speeding up Union Street in Bangor. "I wrote her either five or six tickets - unregistered motor vehicle, uninspected motor vehicle, speeding, no taillights - I wrote her up for everything," he said.

"It was the first stop I made on my own and I felt obligated to write those tickets."

He remembers the woman's name (but won't disclose it) and her tears, but by her scheduled court date, "she had fixed all the issues" and ...
