Coins tossed into Luray Caverns' wishing well added up to a
record $20,440 in 1988, officials at the attraction say.
As in past years, the money will be distributed to various health
and nonprofit organizations, including the March of Dimes, American
Heart Association, American Cancer Society, Muscular Dystrophy
Association and the University of Virginia Medical Research Center.
Established 35 years ago, Luray Caverns' 6-foot-deep well has
collected more than $250,000 from an estimated 20 million visitors.
Luray Caverns spokesman Holt Maloney said more than 500,000 coins
constituted 1988's total.
"We collect all types of other items as well," Maloney said.
