Article: Ellsworth may extend methadone moratorium

ELLSWORTH - Even though no provider is knocking on the door, city officials are looking to extend a moratorium on methadone clinics for another six months.

"This is not a delay tactic or anything like that. This is about wanting to do the right thing," acting Ellsworth City Manager Michelle Beal said Tuesday.

The city first adopted a 180-day moratorium on March 20 to give city staff time to prepare an ordinance, but Beal said, more time is needed.

"The code enforcement and planning offices are working on that together, but they're not quite finished," she said. "This [extension] would give us time to be very careful on how we create this."

City councilors will vote on the proposed extension ...
