When Maryland Gov. William Donald Schaefer slashed money from his
budget for two prized projects in the Washington suburbs, lawmakers
from Montgomery and Prince George's counties reacted quite
differently.
Montgomery legislators, to quote one, "almost flipped out." But
Prince George's lawmakers, as one delegate put it, were "very
unworried."
The 23 delegates and eight senators from Prince George's,
confident of their power and influence at the Maryland State House,
knew that by the time the General Assembly session ended April 10,
they would have their $2.5 million.
"They call us the Beltway bullies," said Sen. Albert R. Wynn
(D-Prince George's).
