Article: Rise in Ultraviolet Radiation; Tied to Antarctic Ozone Hole; Higher `Biologically Relevant' Levels Reaching Earth

Scientists reported yesterday that for the first time they have detected an increase in "biologically relevant" levels of ultraviolet radiation reaching the ground as a result of the ozone hole over Antarctica.

This is the first indication that the depletion of ozone, which blocks much of the sun's ultraviolet radiation, is beginning to cause the potentially harmful effect that has long been predicted.

Levels of ultraviolet measured on the Antarctic Peninsula during mid-October, when the seasonal ozone hole is most severe, were found to be much higher than normal and typical of the higher levels found in summer, according to Dan Lubin and John E. Frederick of the University of Chicago ...
