KILLBUCK -- When Tess Tharp reports for work, she feels like a kid in sweet shop. Maybe because she is.

"Yes, it is harder than it looks," said said Tharp, a 14-year-old freshman at West Holmes High School who spends 20 hours a week scooping sundaes, stirring shakes and squirting soft-serve cones at the Killbuck Sweet Shoppe.

One of the first things Tharp learned at her summer job is that the soft-serve machine can seem like it has a mind of its own -- an unexpected air bubble can result in an equally unexpected, shirt- covering spurt of ice cream.

"She has gone home more than once covered in chocolate," half- joked Sweet Shoppe co-owner Sheri Everett.
