During the past two weeks, we've seen a frigid stretch with snow
flurries and temperatures below freezing, followed by a stretch of
much milder weather.
To understand these changes, why the weather warms up and cools
down, dries out and becomes moist, you must look upstream. The
"stream" in this case is the jet stream, the river of fast-moving air
above our heads.
The jet stream exists because of temperature differences
throughout the atmosphere, which works to make temperatures the same
everywhere. For this to happen, the atmosphere must mix, and to mix,
it must move.
