William Attwood, 69, a retired board chairman of Newsday and
former senior editor of Look magazine who in the 1960s had served as
ambassador to Guinea and then Kenya, died April 14 at his home in New
Caanan, Conn., after a heart attack.
He joined Look in 1951. Over the next decade, he was European
editor, national editor and foreign editor. He took a leave of
absence from Look to work as a speechwriter in the 1960 presidential
campaign of John F. Kennedy. After the election, he was named
ambassador to Guinea, a post he held until 1963. He was ambassador
to Kenya from 1964 to 1966. He also had been a special adviser on
African affairs to the U.S. mission at the United Nations.
