A towering linden tree beside the C&O Canal in Georgetown, slated
for destruction by the National Park Service last May, has been
spared the chain saw, at least for now.
"This is great news," said Ron Quimby, one of the many office
workers in Georgetown who protested the Park Service plan. "It took a
long time, but we won."
The reprieve came after Quimby and other Georgetown residents and
workers responded angrily to an announcement posted on the 60-foot
tree near Thomas Jefferson Street NW saying it would be cut down.
The announcement said the tree caused an "extremely hazardous"
problem for the Park Service employees who crew the canal barge that
provides rides in warm months.
